HOW TO FOLLOW THE MASS IN LATIN

HIGH MASS
and
LOW MASS:

There are Latin-English Booklet Missals available in the pews of the Chapel.  These make it possible to easily follow the Mass, while providing in English the Latin prayers used throughout the Mass.

A High Mass is distinguished from a Low Mass in that the High Mass is sung, and -- in the case of a Solemn High Mass -- will also include the participation of deacons and sub-deacons at the altar along with the Priest who offers the Mass.

The rubrics for High Mass are slightly different than those for Low Mass.

The indications for High Mass for the faithful who assist at the Mass are provided in the right-hand margins of the Mass Booklet alongside the English.  These indications guide the faithful as to when to sit and stand during the Mass, and will point out when this is different from Low Mass.

During High Mass, the faithful are permitted to join with the choir in the sung responses (Dominus Vobiscum: Et Cum Spiritu Tuo…) as well as during the Preface of the Mass, and for such parts of the Mass which are sung by the choir; such as, the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei.  Normally, for the Kyrie and Gloria, the chant is alternated with the choir.

These responses are not to be made during Low Mass, which is not a sung Mass.

During Low Mass the responses to the Priest are made exclusively by the acolytes who serve the Mass, while the faithful assist in prayerful silence.

DRESS CODE
We know from our Faith that Christ is present in the Blessed Sacrament, and that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the most exalted form of worship given to us by God.  In the Mass, it is Christ Who worships, Who adores, Who intercedes for us.

Given the lofty dignity of Holy Mass and the Presence of God in our Tabernacle,  modesty and appropriate attire are required in our Chapel.  Please observe, at a minimum, the following guidelines when attending Church services:

  • No T-shirts, jeans and other casual clothing that is unsuitable for Church
  • No immodest tops or blouses should be worn
  • Women and girls' skirts and dresses should cover the knee when seated
  • Women and girls should cover their heads while at Mass out of modesty
MANNER OF RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION
In the Traditional Latin Mass, we receive the Holy Eucharist on the tongue, while kneeling at the Altar rail.  As a measure of greater reverence and respect for Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, a Communion linen has been added to the Altar railing.  When coming to receive Holy Communion, please place your hands beneath this linen so as to protect the Blessed Sacrament should a Host or any particle of a Host fall while Holy Communion is being distributed.
